Phase 8: The Final Countdown

1 – 2 Months Ahead

  • Digitalize Documents: Email yourself (and a trusted contact) copies of your passport, insurance, and itinerary.

  • Prepare Digital/Paper Copies: Print boarding passes and booking confirmations—do not rely solely on your phone.  Paperwork organized and in a folder in carry-on luggage.

  • Organize your packing.  Keep it handy, reduce to minimum.

  • Organize medications.  Confirm that you have enough of your prescriptions to cover the length of your holiday, and a couple weeks beyond.

2 – 3 Weeks Ahead

  • Purchase local currency one to two weeks in advance to secure better rates and ensure you have cash-on-hand.

  • Monitor government travel advisories for warnings regarding safety, such as terrorism, civil unrest, or health crises—specifically looking for Level 3 ('Avoid non-essential travel') or Level 4 ('Avoid all travel') warnings.

  • Check local news for transport strikes, protests, or strikes that could disrupt your itinerary. Be prepared to make last-minute adjustments to your plans.

  • Download Offline Maps/Apps:  Download Google Maps of the area, teranslate apps, and local transport apps, as well as the apps recommended in my apps section.(should include enrolling in government travel programs (like STEP for Americans) to receive alerts while there.)  Canada Alertable, STEP for usa.  Most developed nations have similar registration services via their foreign ministries, such as the UK’s "Locate" service or Australia’s "Smartraveller" registration, which provide location-specific alerts.

This is it...The Final Countdown!

1–2 Days Ahead

  • Clean/Secure Your Home: Take out the trash, freeze leftovers, unplug appliances, and set timers for lights.

  • Pets and Plants, take them to your arranged caregivers.

  • Luggage “final check”.

  • Check the news for protests or strikes.

  • Confirm paperwork and passports are in carry-on luggage.

Confirm medications are in carry-on luggage

24 Hours Before / Day of Departure

  • Check-in & Digital Boarding Pass: Check in for your flight and download your digital boarding pass to your phone.

  • Clear the Fridge: Eat or discard perishable food items. Empty all garbage cans in the house.

  • Unplug and Secure: Unplug non-essential electronics (toasters, TVs) and lock all windows and doors.

  • Set the Thermostat: Adjust the thermostat to save energy, but not so low/high that it risks frozen pipes or mold.

  • Shut off main water valve: unless you have arranged to have someone water your lawn, shut off water to your home and turn down your hot water tank to it's lowest setting.

Have a Great trip… and do me a favor…. Check that your stove is turned off BEFORE you leave.
