Which Train App?

For the best European train booking, use Trainline or Rail Europe for easy cross-country travel, and Omio for comparing trains, buses, and flights.

  • Italy: Use Trenitalia or Italo for the best prices; use Trainline for an easy, English-speaking app to compare both.

  • France: Use official SNCF Connect for direct, fee-free booking and real-time updates.

  • SE Asia: 12Go Asia is best for reliable booking in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore.

  • Africa: Book direct through operators like Kenya Railways (SGR) or ONCF Morocco; use Railbookers for multi-country, and luxury operators like Rovos Rail or The Blue Train for high-end travel.

  • South America: Railbookers offers luxury, curated, multi-day journeys, while PeruRail is best for Machu Picchu and Belmond for luxury rail.

  • Australia: NSW TrainLink is best for regional and interstate travel.

Africa’s train system is improving rapidly, with high-quality modern networks in specific countries (like Morocco, South Africa, and Tanzania), but it does not have a consistently excellent continent-wide system. While North Africa and South Africa have robust networks, much of the continent is hindered by aging infrastructure and lack of connectivity

Many parts of Asia possess some of the world's most advanced, efficient, and extensive train systems. Japan, China, Singapore, and South Korea lead with rapid, punctual, and clean high-speed rail and city metro systems.

South America does not have a comprehensive or "very good" intercity passenger train system compared to regions like Europe or Asia. Passenger rail is limited, with most networks focused on freight or tourism. However, some major cities have excellent subways, and scenic/tourist trains operate in Peru, Argentina, and Brazil.

Australia has a very strong, modern suburban rail system in its major cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane), but limited, slow, and infrequent regional or interstate rail connections.

Egypt has a extensive but aged rail network that is undergoing major modernization. While offering a scenic, budget-friendly way to travel between Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, the system is generally considered average rather than "very good," with older trains, maintenance issues, and occasional safety concerns, though high-speed lines are currently under construction

Riding the Rails: Assessing Train Networks in Africa, Asia, and South America

I HIGHLY recommend checking out “The Man in Seat 61” website.  Here you will find AMAZING, detailed, and accurate information and links to train information from all over the world.

Africa

Train tickets in Africa can generally be booked between 30 days and 3 months in advance, depending on the country and operator. High-demand services, such as sleepers in Morocco or popular routes in South Africa, often allow or require booking about 2 months ahead, while many local routes might only allow booking on the day or a few days before.

England:

Train tickets in England and the UK generally open for booking 8 to 12 weeks in advance. The cheapest ‘Advance’ tickets are usually released around this time, with fares increasing closer to the departure date. For the best deals, monitor ticket releases, while peak/off-peak tickets can be bought anytime.  National Rail Enquiries or Trainline.

France:

You can generally book French train tickets (TGV INOUI, Intercités, and TER) 3 to 4 months in advance, with some services opening up to 6–9 months ahead (like OUIGO). Booking early is crucial for lower fares ("Prem's" tickets), especially for high-speed TGV trains, which typically open 120 days (approx. 4 months) before travel

  • TGV & Intercités: Book 3–4 months out, though special seasonal openings may apply.

  • OUIGO (Low-Cost): Can be booked up to 9 months in advance.

  • TER (Regional): Usually available 3–5 months in advance.

  • Eurostar: Often available 6 months in advance.

  • Where to Book: Use SNCF Connect or Trainline to monitor booking openings

Greece

You can generally book train tickets in Greece (via Hellenic Train) from 1 to 2 months in advance, with some discounts available for early purchases within 60 days of travel. While some tickets are available online earlier, booking a few days to a few weeks in advance is common for most routes, with some advance discounts starting 30–60 days out.

India

In India, you can generally book train tickets 60 days in advance (excluding the date of the journey). This Advance Reservation Period (ARP) applies to most express and mail trains, with bookings opening at 8:00 AM IST on the IRCTC website

Key Booking Rules & Details

  • 60-Day Rule: The 60-day window starts from the date the train originates from its source station.

  • Foreign Tourist Quota: Foreigners can book tickets up to 365 days in advance through the dedicated Foreign Tourist Quota.

  • Exceptions: Some specific intercity or day express trains may have shorter booking windows.

  • Tatkal Bookings: Urgent bookings for most classes open one day before departure (excluding the date of journey), starting at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC/Sleeper classes.

  • Intermediate Stations: If you are boarding from an intermediate station, the booking opens based on the train's departure date from the originating station.

It is highly recommended to book as soon as the 60-day window opens for popular routes to secure a confirmed seat.

Italy:

Trenitalia's train schedules and fares are typically only released between 90-120 days in advance*, so it's not a good idea to solidify travel plans before that point—the timetable can change seasonally.

You can buy your train tickets roughly 2 months ahead of when you'll need them and can even book them the day before your train trip. Once you're in Italy, you can buy tickets just before you get on a train.

Buying tickets soon after they're released gives you a better chance of securing seats during busy travel days and may give you access to sales or ticket discounts that are only available for advance purchases.

* The 90-120 day figure refers to high-speed trains. Regional train tickets are usually only available about 60 days in advance.

Japan

You can book Japanese train tickets, including Shinkansen bullet trains, exactly one month in advance (starting at 10:00 AM JST on the same day of the preceding month). While tickets can be purchased at stations, booking online via platforms like SmartEX or JR West is recommended, especially for peak seasons.

Morocco

ONCF - Train Tickets Online Booking | Schedule, Timetable & Stations

Portugal:

Train tickets in Portugal (CP) and Spain (Renfe) generally open for booking 60 days in advance. While some high-speed Spanish trains may load up to 90 days ahead, and others, can be erratic, booking 60 days out is standard to secure the best fares

South America

Train tickets in South America can generally be booked 1 to 3 months in advance, with popular tourist services like Machu Picchu trains in Peru booking up even sooner. For specific routes, such as Trenes Argentinos, sales usually open about two months prior, while high-end tourist trains may allow bookings months earlier.

Key Booking Information:

  • Peru (Machu Picchu): Book at least 1–3 months in advance for trains via PeruRail or Inca Rail.

  • Argentina: Tickets usually open around two months in advance via Trenes Argentinos.

  • General Advice: Popular routes often sell out, especially during high season (May-September in Peru), so booking as soon as booking opens is recommended.

  • Third-party booking: Many regional tickets can also be booked through platforms like 12go.asia.

Spain:

Train tickets in Spain typically open for booking 60 to 90 days in advance. While some high-speed routes may open earlier, RENFE often releases tickets in blocks, sometimes as late as 30–45 days before departure. Booking roughly 2–3 months ahead is recommended to secure the best prices, especially for AVE and long-distance trains.
